Owwie and Harriet

By: Mary Lyon

Man, never thought I’d hear such yowling and screeching and caterwauling! And from WHOSE side? The Crybaby Conservatives of our land are gnashing their teeth and rending their garments over their selected one’s latest selection. As they say in entertainment circles – “pass the popcorn.”

It is indeed with a bemused sense of entertainment that I watch the uproar from the radical wrong over that little ol’ gal from Texas, Harriet Miers, she of the prim and proper demeanor, the black eyeliner, and the – um – well – interesting qualifications to be a Supreme Court Associate Justice. You’ve really gotta hand it to those conservatives. They sure are at a disadvantage here (they who own it all and somehow STILL aren’t satisfied).

I’ve met people like them, even lived with a few of them. No matter what you do for them, no matter how often you give in to them, no matter how many times you let them have their way, no matter how many temper tantrums and acting-outs and other pre-school-level behavioral sins they commit that you somehow keep tolerating, no matter how obnoxious and demanding they become, they still bleet like frenzied sheep about how unfair it all is and how they’re being had and screwed over and victimized and ripped-off and robbed. It’s almost as though they’ve been given the best and shiniest tricycles in the play yard, whose floors and walls have been padded with the best and softest cushions, with loyal and attentive lapdogs and nursemaids hovering over their every step so nothing bad happens to them, and they still manage to fall and suffer an “owwie” in spite of themselves. Pooooooooooooooooooooooooor babies! The truth is, people like them are simply people who can’t ever be pleased. No matter what you do for them or how much you accommodate them or give into them. Nothing will ever be good enough, or enough, period. Greed and self-entitlement this deep-seated cannot ever be satisfied.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight: They run everything in Washington and never hesitate to throw their weight around. They own the Senate. They own the House of Reps. They own that other House into which they happily admit prancing gay male prostitutes masquerading as “reporters,” thieves looting the treasury, reverse Robin Hoods, spies from the Phillipines, and traitorous backstabbers who yank the cover from other spies for sheer political vendetta purposes, while their fearless leader stays mostly asleep at the switch when he’s not betraying signs of hitting the bottle again or counting the hours til his next vacation. They also own most of the judiciary, a large number of governorships around the country, and they have a lock on the media including their very own sublet propaganda network. They can do anything they want, and have anything they want, and wreck, rape, pillage, and dismantle anything they want, because whatever opposition they face has been defanged, declawed, deboned, and demoralized. And they’re still not happy. Somehow all of that is still not enough.

And now this. Harriet Miers. Qualified to sit on the highest bench in the land because of the highest-caliber qualification money can buy with these folks: it’s who you know. She’s qualified because she’s close to George W. Bush. They’ve known each other for years. She evidently helped identify and cover his tracks in the whole Texas Air National Guard AWOL scandal, plus running the Texas Lotteryworks. WOW. She waited at his elbow in August 2001 (was that before he got his cute little dog, Barney?), doing his bidding and handing him his important big-boy papers during his last long vacation at the pig farm before the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked. She cut her hair short as many mature women do to look a little younger. And apparently, she’s another one of those Bush women, like Contradicta, who’s married to her job – ie: nannying George. She qualifies merely because she lives in his orbit, breathes the rarified air off his planet, and has ministered unto him for many moons. Whatever you say, milord. Another crony you can congratulate for doing “a heck of a job.”

And again, George says “just trust me” while his other minders decree that her paperwork and other background information will remain locked away from public and Senate view, as was done with John Roberts. What’s most amusing about this is that those who are telling Dubya – “not so fast, pal” are those in his own camp. They’re the ones having trouble trusting him, his judgment, and his motivations. They’re the ones who won’t be pleased. Even while they own everything. Crybaby Conservatives for whom owning everything evidently just isn’t enough.

I think if I were in their shoes, I’d be pretty happy with such a state of affairs. Owning everything. Hmm – must be nice. Think of what MY side could do with such an obscenely lopsided advantage. At the very least they’d have a lot better and more detailed justification for the choices they make than “just trust me.” My crowd would at least be able to slap a band-aid on whatever “owwie” it happens to be at the moment and climb back on their tricycles and continue peddling on down the block like big boys and girls. But evidently spoiled wrong-wing snot noses ranging from Ann Coulter and Pat Buchanan to George Will aren’t satisfied. For some inexplicable reason, as Will puts it, it’s just too big an “owwie,” one that’s “reducing the Supreme Court to a private plaything useful for fulfilling whims on behalf of friends.”

Heck, this George is letting the other George off easy. If it were up to Ann Coulter, apparently that other George would be facing impeachment now. Amazing that the day arrives when I actually agree with THAT blithering Bush handmaiden.
